How to Keep Your Flowers Fresh

The first hour

• Unwrap the bouquet and cut about an inch off every stem at an angle.
• Put the flowers in a clean vase with cool water; a bouquet of 50 or 100 roses needs a big one.
• Keep the arrangement out of direct sun and away from heat vents and air conditioner blasts.

Every two days

• Change the water and rinse the vase.
• Trim the stems again by half an inch.
• Remove any leaves below the water line and any petal that has gone soft.

Las Vegas specifics

The air here is dry and hot most of the year. A cooler room, water topped up daily and a spot away from windows make the biggest difference. Never leave flowers in a parked car.

Flower boxes

The flowers in a box sit in a water source inside. Add a little water every two days so the foam stays wet; no need to move the flowers.

Tulips

Tulips keep growing in the vase and lean toward the light. Short stems, cold water and a cool room keep them upright longer.
